Our approach
How the picks get made
Fewer products than most sites, each one assessed against the same four sources, and a plain statement of who it is wrong for.
The specification, in full
Manufacturer spec sheets, sizing charts and warranty terms read end to end, not summarised from a retail listing. Warranty length and what it actually covers is usually the most honest quality signal a brand publishes.
The published evidence
The federal standard a product is certified to — FMVSS 213 for car seats, the CPSC crib rule, ASTM for strollers and carriers — cited by name, along with anything NHTSA, the AAP or the CPSC has published about the category. Ratings are quoted as measured, not rounded up.
Owner reports at volume
Aggregated reviews across retailers, read for the pattern rather than the anecdote, with deliberate attention to the one-star reports. That is where the failure modes live: the monitor that drops its connection at month four, the stroller fold that needs two hands, the seat that will not fit three-across.
Prices, dated
Every price is checked against the live listing and printed with the date it was checked. Retail prices move constantly, and a guide that hides when it last looked is not being straight with you.
The sources we work from
- NHTSA car seat ease-of-use ratings and the FMVSS 213 standard
- American Academy of Pediatrics safe-sleep guidance
- CPSC recall database and the Safe Sleep for Babies Act
- ASTM and JPMA certification programs for cribs, strollers and carriers
- Consumer Product Safety Commission stroller and carrier standards
- Manufacturer specification sheets, sizing charts and warranty terms.
- Aggregated owner reviews across retailers, including the one-star reports.
On ratings
We do not publish an invented score out of ten. Where a rating appears it is the retailer's aggregate owner rating, shown with its source and review count, so you can weigh it yourself.
On corrections
When a pick turns out to be wrong, the guide is edited and the change is stated in the article rather than quietly swapped. Commission never changes the order of the picks.
